Then venture forward to the exuberant reverence of Gerald Finzi's Magnificat and the haunting harmonies of David Conte's perspectives on Silent Night and Ave Maria.

These seasonal rejoicings are offered in two different locations in the Washington metropolitan area; a complimentary reception follows each concert. A pre-concert lecture will be given by Circle Singers' Board of Directors member Betty Buchanan, founder of Singing A - Z and former music director of the Capitol Hill Choral Society.

Admission is free for children 12 years and under. At St. Patrick's Episcopal Church, limited parking is available in the small church lot, with additional parking along Whitehaven Parkway. Street parking is available at St. David's Episcopal Church.

Founder Sondra Goldsmith Proctor has set a tradition for Circle Singers of focusing each mid-season concert on music from other countries. This year we stay on our own continent to explore works by composers in Mexico, Canada, and the U.S. Some of these compositions are "new" in the sense that they are unfamiliar to most American audiences; other pieces have been composed within the last decade or two. Featured works include motets by Ignacio de Jerusalem, who was born in Spain and moved to Mexico in the early 1700s. Keyboard artist Laurie Bunn will present music by Mexican composer Rodolfo Halffter. Contemporary works by American composers include Nocturnes by Morten Lauridsen and two tributes to music by David Conte. Among the Canadian compositions to be performed are pieces by Nick Peros and Imant Raminsh and selections from Eleanor Daley's Requiem.

A pre-concert lecture will be given by Circle Singers' Board of Directors member Betty Buchanan, founder of Singing A - Z and former music director of the Capitol Hill Choral Society.

Admission is free for children 12 years and under. St. Columba's Episcopal Church is convenient to the Tenleytown subway stop on the Metro's Red Line; street parking is limited.

This concert is the second of a series that looks at the linkage between the rich musical heritage of Africa and the United States. Featured compositions with texts by poet James Weldon Johnson reflect the spirited oratory that African-American preachers have used in the pulpit, a style rooted in oral traditions developed under slavery which evolved into a distinctive cultural art form. The program will also include remembrances of early spirituals based in the African tradition of relaying information in caller response. The National American Red Cross Chorus joins with Circle Singers to collaborate in this continuing journey of musical exploration.

A pre-concert lecture will be given by James Thomas, Director of the National American Red Cross Chorus and former member of Circle Singers' Board of Directors.

Admission is free for children 12 years and under. Parking is available in the St. Patrick's Episcopal Church lot and along Whitehaven Parkway; street parking is available at St. David's Episcopal Church.
